about scott
Film Education, Art, and SKEW Media Filmmaking,
Scott Kinnamon moves fluidly between filmmaking, education and art with the purpose of exploring how story is central to human existence. By using film, he provokes teens and other participants to move beyond consumption of images to rendering a depiction of their own experience whether in a fictionalized format or autobiographical. He combines the thrill of mastering new techniques with the ability to work with students to tell an original story that often becomes a central way of communicating with others.
Central to this process is collaboration – moving through working with a team to produce a film which involves decisions regarding composition, direction, vision, narrative arc and personal voice. It also requires understanding how to find authenticity, which often means wandering into the deep end. This process of working with students on film demands of students that they think about how the world is comprised – and as students become filmmakers, it builds recognition of individual, undeniable traits and fosters ways of forging these unique abilities into constructive qualities.
To date, Scott and his organizations have served more than a thousand youth and adults, and sent scores of kids to film schools across the nation. The Young Filmmakers Workshop has become the flagship program of Denver Film Society's education programming. In 2011, as a result of the work, Scott Kinnamon was named a 2011 Pathmaker of the Year by the Denver Post.
