FILM EDUCATION

Scott is a visionary artist and teacher who has the rare ability to connect with people from all walks of life. Denver Film Society has benefited greatly by working with Scott for the past 7 years as founding instructor for our Young Filmmakers Workshops program.
— Shawn Bayer, Director of Development, Denver Film Center

Known for a teaching technique that engages students collaboratively in creating film, Scott has taught teen workshops for over ten years adapting his technique to school settings, summer workshop intensives and partnerships with local and national organizations.

I believe each person’s film is a snapshot of their developmental moment. An opportunity for self-understanding and for articulating our place in our culture. For this reason, video is an ideal medium with which to work with adolescents.

Story. That is the essence of my education work. The innate human need to tell our story, to articulate our existence is at the core of the work I do. The creative need that drove primitive men and women to paint their stories on cave walls is identical to the need that brings people to my filmmaking workshop. Storytelling is one of the central things that identifies us as human. It is at that primal depth that I hope to work with people on their own stories.

Not only is the word “story” tattooed on his wrist, storytelling is ingrained in the very fiber of Scott’s being. He has a great way of connecting with young people and teenagers and his work has helped them use the power of filmmaking to better understand their own narratives.
